Training Policy Update: Materials and Tests Training Policy


The TDOT Aggregate Technician is an individual who can demonstrate the knowledge of and ability to interpret the results of aggregate tests as well as perform calculations necessary to report the data from each test.

The TDOT Concrete Field Testing Technician is an individual who can demostrate the knowledge of and avalibility to perform concrete field tests for acceptance or quality control.

This Concrete Certified Field Recertification is a one day in person course consisting of course review and exam. Demonstration will be scheduled for another date and notification will be sent.

 

 

 

This three-day course is designed to provide both TDOT roadway inspectors and private contractors with a working knowledge and understanding of proper techniques for constructing Hot Mix Asphalt pavements with quality and efficiency according to TDOT specifications.

The course requires a working knowledge of the following:

  • TDOT Standard Specification 407 - Bituminous Plant Mix Pavements
  • Project Organization and Communication
  • Surface Preparation
  • Hot Mix Asphalt Delivery
  • Hot Mix Asphalt Placement
  • Joint Construction
  • Compaction
  • Density, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance
  • Local Issues, Troubleshooting, and Problem Solving

Prerequistes for TDOT Employees

To successfully complete this certification, employees must possess basic background knowledge of Departmental Practices. Paving, and Mathematics. All employees on a paving project are not required to have the cerification, supervisors are encouraged to allow their technicians some on the job training of a paving project under the supervision of a certified HMA Roadway Technician prior to enrolling them in the class.

Employees enrolling in this class must meet the minumum requirements:

  • 6 months working with the Department
  • Supervisor's approval and recommendation that employee has a basic understanding of :
    • Departmental Practices
    • HMA Paving
    • Math Including:
      • Basic Arithmetic
      • Order of Operations
      • Percentages

 

This course provides an overview of Hot Mix Asphalt, mix design and verification testing, and TDOT Mix related specifications.

Who is required to have this course?

  • Each mix design submitted by the contractor must be prepared and signed by a certified TDOT Asphalt Mix Design. (TDOT Specification 407.03.C.1)
  • TDOT Materials and Tests employees that will be conducting verification testing for mix designs.
  • In general this specification is not required for TDOT Operations personnel

TDOT Employees

  • Completion of Hot Mix Asphalt QA/C Level 1 and Level 2
  • Minimum of 1 year with the Department
  • Supervisor's approval and written recommendation that employee is:
    • Has general knowledge of asphalt mix laboratory testing
    • Familiarity with applicable TDOT Standard Specifications
    • Has a need to be certified as an Asphalt Mix Design Technician

Certification Requirement

TDOT will grant a 5 year certification only to those applicants who meet the following requirements:

  • Attendance of the 4-Day Course in its entirety
  • Successful completion of a 4 hour maximum examination with a passing score of 70% or above. (The exam is OPEN book)
  • Successful Lab Demonstration for Regional Materials and Tests Personnel

Exam Session Information

A GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID IS REQUIRED AND SHALL BE PROVIDED TO THE PROCTOR PRIOR TO RECEIVING ACCESS TO THE EXAM 

You are required to login to the MS Teams Meeting for the entire exam session. The Session will start promptly @ 9 AM Eastern, 8 AM Central.

Late arrivals will not be accommodated.
