Training Policy Update (1.11.2023): Materials and Tests Training Policy


The TDOT Aggregate Technician is an individual who can demonstrate the knowledge of and ability to interpret the results of aggregate tests as well as perform calculations necessary to report the data from each test.

Scope of Course

AASHTO - R 90/ASTM D75 - Sampling of Aggregates

AASHTO - R 76/ASTM C702 - Reducing Samplesof Aggregate to Testing Size

AASHTO - T 255/ASTM C566 - Total Evaporable Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying

AASHTO - T 11/ASTM C117 - Materials Finer Than 75-mm (No.200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing

AASHTO - T 27/ASTM C136 - Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates

AASHTO - T 84/ASTM C128 - Specific Gravity and Absorption of Fine Aggregate

AASHTO - T 85/ASTM C127 - Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate

AASHTO - T 104/ASTM C88 - Soundness of Aggregates by Use of Sodium or Mangesium Sulfate

AASHTO - T 96/ASTM C131 - Resistance to Degradation of Small-Size Coarse Aggregate by Abrasion and Impact in the Los Angeles Machine

Certification Requirements

  1. TDOT will grant certificaiton to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements: A passing grade on both the written and performance examinations.
  2. The written examination is "Closed Book". To pass the written examination a minimum score of 70% is required.
  3. The performance exam is "Closed Book" and requires demonstration of ability to perfrom and describe AASHTO T 11/ASTM C117 and AASHTO T 27/ASTM C 136.
  4. Recertification is necessary every five (5) years by successfully completing the written and performance examinations.

The program requires a working knowledge of the following AASHTO/ASTM Standards:

• AASHTO R 90/ASTM D75 - Sampling of Aggregates

• AASHTO R 76/ASTM C702 - Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size

• AASHTO T 255/ASTM C566 - Total Evaporable Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying

• AASHTO T 11/ASTM C117 - Materials Finer Than 75-mm (No. 200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing

• AASHTO T 27/ASTM C136 - Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates

 

Recertification is necessary every five (5) years and requires that the technician attend an in-person recertification class and successfully complete the written and performance exams.

 

The TDOT Concrete Field Testing Technician is an individual who can demostrate the knowledge of and avility to perform concrete field tests for acceptance or quality control.

Scope of Course

  • AASHTO T 309/ASTM C1064 - Temperature of Freshly-Mixed Portland Cement Concrete
  • AASHTO T 141/ASTM C172 - Sampling Freshly-Mixed Concrete
  • AASHTO T 119/ASTM C143 - Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete
  • AASHTO T 121/ASTM C138 - Unit Weight, Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
  • AASHTO T 153/ASTM C231 - Air Content of Freshly-Mixed Concrete By the Pressure Method
  • AASHTO T 196/ASTM C173 - Air Concrete of Freshly-Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
  • AASHTO T 23/ASTM C31 - Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
  • ASTM C1611/1621/1758 - Self Consolidating Concrete

Certification Requirements

  1. TDOT will grant certification to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements: A passing grade on both the written and performance examinations.
  2. The written examination is "Closed Book" with test sections on each of the AASHTO/ASTM Standards. To pass the written examination a minimum score of 70% is required.
  3. The performance exam is "Closed Book" and requires demonstration of ability to perform and descibe each of the AASHT/ASTM Stanards listed above.
  4. Recertification is necessary every five (5) years and requires that the technician attend the class and successfully complete the written and performance examinations.

This Concrete Certified Field Recertification is a one day in person course consisting of course review, exam and demonstration.

You can no longer take this course on-line effective January 1, 2022.

 

 

This three-day course is designed to provide both TDOT roadway inspectors and private contractors with a working knowledge and understanding of proper techniques for constructing Hot Mix Asphalt pavements with quality and efficiency according to TDOT specifications.

Scope of Course

The course requires a working knowledge of the following:

  • TDOT Standard Specification 407 - Bituminous Plant Mix Pavements
  • Project Organization and Communication
  • Surface Preparation
  • Hot Mix Asphalt Delivery
  • Hot Mix Asphalt Placement
  • Joint Construction
  • Compaction
  • Density, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance
  • Local Issues, Troubleshooting, and Problem Solving

Prerequistes for TDOT Employees

To successfully complete this certification, employees must possess basic background knowledge of Departmental Practices. Paving, and Mathematics. All employees on a paving project are not required to have the cerification, supervisors are encouraged to allow their technicians some on the job training of a paving project under the supervision of a certified HMA Roadway Technician prior to enrolling them in the class.

Employees enrolling in this class must meet the minumum requirements:

  • 6 months working with the Department
  • Supervisor's approval and recommendation that employee has a basic understanding of :
    • Departmental Practices
    • HMA Paving
    • Math Including:
      • Basic Arithmetic
      • Order of Operations
      • Percentages

  • Nuclear Gauge Technician (CEI) - Open Book

** A GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID IS REQUIRED AND SHALL BE PROVIDED TO THE PROCTOR PRIOR TO RECEIVING ACCESS TO THE EXAM **
