Training Policy Update: Materials and Tests Training Policy


The TDOT Concrete Mix Design Technician is an individual who is responsible for performing all necessary tests and calculations to submit concrete mix designs for approval.

Scope of Course

The program requires a working knowledge of the following:

  • Basic Concrete Ingredients
  • AASHTO R 39/ASTM C192 - Making and Curing Concrete Test Sepcimens in the Laboratory
  • AASHTO T 22/ASTM C39 - Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Sepcimens

Prerequisites

  • Successful Completion of Concrete Field Testing Technician Course
  • Successful Completion of Concrete Plant Quality Control Technician Course
  • Advanced understanding of concrete testing, placement, inspection, and quality control
  • Advance knowledge of applicable TDOT Standard Specifictaions, Supplemental Specifications, Special Provisions, and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Capable of performing basic mathematic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percertages, etc.)

Certification Requirements

  1. TDOT will grant certification to those applicants who have a passing grade on the written examination. The exam is "Closed Book" and a minimum score of 70% or above is required.
  2. Recertification is necessary every five (5) years and requiresthat the technician attend the class and successfully complete the written examination.

 

The TDOT Concrete Plant Quality Control Technician is an individual who is responsible for performing all sampling, testing, and inspection for process control at the concrete plant.

Scope of Course

The program requires a working knowledge of the following:

  • AASHTO T 2/ASTM D75 - Sampling of Aggregates
  • AASHTO R 76/ASTM C702 - Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size
  • AASHTO T 255/ASTM C566 - Total Evaporable Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying
  • AASHTO T 11/ASTM C117 - Materials Finer than 75-mm (No.200) Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing
  • AASHTO T 27/ASTM C136 - Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates

This course provides an overview of Hot Mix Asphalt, mix design and verification testing, and TDOT Mix related specifications.

Who is required to have this course?

  • Each mix design submitted by the contractor must be prepared and signed by a certified TDOT Asphalt Mix Design. (TDOT Specification 407.03.C.1)
  • TDOT Materials and Tests employees that will be conducting verification testing for mix designs.
  • In general this specification is not required for TDOT Operations personnel

  • AASHTO T 166 - Bulk Specific Gravity of Compacted Bituminous Mixtures Using   Saturated Surface-Dry Specimens
  • AASHTO T 176 - Plastic Fines in Graded Aggregates and Soils by Use of the Sand Equivalent Test
  • AASHTO T 209 - Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity and Density of Bituminous Paving Mixtures
  • AASHTO T 245 - Resistance to Plastic Flow of Bituminous Mixtures Using Marshall Apparatus
  • AASHTO T 248 - Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size
  • AASHTO T 304 - Uncompacted Void Content of Fine Aggregate
  • AASHTO T 308 - Determining the Asphalt Binder Content of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) by the Ignition Method
  • AASHTO TP 4 - Standard Method for Preparing and Determining the Density of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Specimens by means of teh Superpave Gyratory Compactor
  • ASTM D 4867 - Standard Test Method for Effect of Moisture on Asphalt Concrete Paving Mixture
  • ASTM D 4791 - Standard Test Method for Flat Particles, Elongated Particles, or Flat and Elongated Particles in Coarse Aggregate
  • TDOT Test Method for Glassy Particles in Slag
  • TDOT Test Method for Fractured Face Count for Marshall Mixes
  • TDOT Test Method for Loss on Ignition for Surgace Mixes
  • TDOT Test Method for Ten Minute Boil Test for Anti-Stripping Dosage Rate

TDOT Employees

  • Completion of Hot Mix Asphalt QA/C Level 1 and Level 2
  • Minimum of 1 year with the Department
  • Supervisor's approval and written recommendation that employee is:
    • Has general knowledge of asphalt mix laboratory testing
    • Familiarity with applicable TDOT Standard Specifications
    • Has a need to be certified as an Asphalt Mix Design Technician

Certification Requirement

TDOT will grant a 5 year certification only to those applicants who meet the following requirements:

  • Attendance of the 4-Day Course in its entirety
  • Successful completion of a 4 hour maximum examination with a passing score of 70% or above. (The exam is OPEN book)
  • Successful Lab Demonstration for Regional Materials and Tests Personnel

You are required to login to the MS Teams Meeting for the entire exam session. The Session will start promptly @ 9 AM Eastern, 8 AM Central.
